The History of Law Day & Why It Matters to Texas Lawyers
Published on April 29, 2024 Lawyer Life
Every year on May 1st, lawyers and law enthusiasts across the United States celebrate Law Day. But how did Law Day come to fruition? And how can lawyers use this day to celebrate our legal system while growing and improving their own legal practice?
A Quick Look at How Law Day Came to Be
Law Day’s roots date back to 1957 when Charles S. Rhyne, then-president of the American Bar Association, proposed a day that celebrates our nation’s legal system. In 1961, Congress designated May 1 as the official date for celebrating Law Day.
According to the American Bar Association, Law Day “provides an opportunity to understand how law and the legal process protect our liberty, strive to achieve justice, and contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share.”
Law Day 2024: Voices of Democracy
Each year, Law Day features a unique theme. 2024's theme, "Voices of Democracy," encourages Americans to participate in the 2024 elections by "deepening their understanding of the electoral process; discussing issues in honest and civil ways; turning out to vote; and, finally, helping to move the country forward after free and fair elections."
This theme is relevant and pertinent for many reasons, but one interesting connection links back to Charles S. Rhyne. In 1962, Mr. Rhyne was at the forefront of the landmark Supreme Court redistricting case Baker v. Carr. This case gave federal courts the right to redraw state electoral districts to reflect population shifts. Ultimately, Baker v. Carr established the foundation for the one person, one vote doctrine.
